At a governors meeting of Hook Junior School held in 1991, it was discovered that in 1993 the school would be 150 years old; it was felt by all present that this momentous event should not go unnoticed within the village of Hook and the surrounding area.

Two of the governors, namely John Lambert and Graham Kingsbury. were asked to set up a working party to look at ways in which this event could be celebrated. They looked at several ideas, all of which revolved around the central theme of involving the village. One of the events they considered was some sort of village Fun Run.
|
Unbeknown to John and Graham, another working party was in existence at this time looking at ways for St John's church to raise money for the extension to the new parish room. This group was headed by Bob Ashwood who had also thought of some sort of Fun Run. Very quickly the two groups came together and the Hook Fun Run was born with Bob Ashwood as founding chairman.

The first running of this great event was held on 16th May 1992, starting and finishing at the Hook Junior and Infants School as it does to this day. A total of 225 runners took part over 2.5 miles or 5 miles. Proceeds from the first event were split between three Hook organisations - St John's Church, Hook Youth Club and the Old Folk's Club.
|
By 1996 the event expanded to take in a 10 mile road race, 5 mile road race and 2.5 mile fun run. In 2006 the 5 mile road race was replaced with a 6 mile race and a second 2.5 mile run was added.

From small beginnings the Hook Fun Run & Road Race has expanded to nearly four times its original size and now raises over £5,000 every year for local good causes.
